A letter to Santa

A letter to Santa is great fun for kids but if your little ones can’t write yet, there’s still plenty of decorating for them to get involved with. Here’s some ideas on how to decorate Royal Mail letters to Santa!

The best part about this straightforward DIY is you can make your Santa letters with supplies you already have in your craft cupboard (old wrapping paper cut into shapes, paints etc.) Or if you live close to town, we recommend Hobbycraft or Paperchase for picking up some cute Christmas stickers. This gets the kids involved in the process from start to finish by allowing them to choose what special decorations they’d like to use.

For the letter itself, you can use whatever paper you have kicking around – for example some bright festive green cards! Depending on your child’s age they can either write something out themselves or Mum/Dad can create the template. However, there are plenty of variations you can use depending on what your children would like to share with Father Christmas.

After decorating, you’ll need a large letter envelope to get everything packaged safely. Don’t forget to include a note with your child’s full name and address so that Santa can write back – kids always love opening and reading their letter from Santa! Another sweet final touch is to add a seal.

You’ll want to address your letters to the following:

Santa/Father Christmas,

Santa’s Grotto,

Reindeerland,

XM4 5HQ

Since Santa is obviously very busy at this time of year, remember to get your letter posted by Friday 8 December in order to receive a reply. You can read all the details here on The Royal Mail website. Happy Christmas crafting!

Piglets Adventure Farm, York

For a truly unforgettable Christmas day out, we love Piglets Adventure Farm! Book your flight on a magical sleigh ride, then arrive at Elf Airlines to see your name up in lights on the live departure board. Write a letter to Santa whilst you wait to board, before riding through the trees and twinkling lights to the Woodland Village. See Santa in his grotto, unlock Santa’s toyshop and see animals starring in the nativity scene – and there are lots more too! It promises to be a magical day out for the whole family, plus there are free mince pies for grown-ups too!

Cairngorms National Park, Scottish Highlands

Head to Britain’s largest National Park this Christmas, for a Christmas day out with Santa, Rudolph and the rest of their reindeer friends! Daily trips run to visit the herd of reindeer who roam freely around Cairngorms National Park, and we hear they’re all really friendly and like to be hand fed! A truly magical way to see the majestic animals in natural surroundings, and with Santa checking into regularly to make sure they’re ready for the biggest job of the year, it’s a great family festive day out

Drusillas Park, East Sussex

There’s loads of festive fun at Drusillas Park this December, making it a great choice for a Christmas day out with the kids! Visit Santa’s Christmas Cottage where kids can tell him all about their list this year, then visit the Husky Cave, where visitors can come face to face with the cuddly canines. With Santa’s Reindeer and the spectacular Winter Wonderland Illuminations too, it’s a magical day out for the whole family.

Drayton’s Magical Christmas, Staffordshire

Drayton’s Magical Christmas is exactly that; magical fun for the whole family! The popular Thomas Land is transformed into a Winter Wonderland, with live shows, carols, light shows, festive food and of course, Father Christmas himself! Each day ends with a fabulous fireworks display, plus there’s a selection of Thomas Land rides open, along with the zoo and the 4D cinema, showing the fantastically festive Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas. Over at the Castle of Dreams, all children receive a free gift and there’s the fab Slide & Glide rink – lots of festive fun to celebrate the 10th year of Drayton’s Magical Christmas.

It’s nearly time for Christmas!

It’s now officially unavoidable – Christmas is on its way. It’s useless to resist the tidal wave of tinsel and crescendo of Christmas music, so this weekend, many parents will be taking the kids to meet the Big Man himself, Santa Claus.

Christmas traditions and fashions may come and go, but one that seems to stay firm is Santa’s Grotto. From gardening stores to castles, shopping centres to museums, Santa somehow manages to be in thousands of places at once, ready to greet young children with a cheery smile and a small present. And there’s a very good reason for it too, as every business owner knows – Santa grottos are a great way to attract customers.

In turn, that means there is a lot of choice for Santa-seeking parents. Most will only go to see one Santa. So, if you want to attract children to your Santa’s grotto, you might need to offer more than a long queue and a short sit on Santa’s knee.

And if you want to take the kids to see Santa somewhere unusual, here are some of our top pick Father Christmas locations around the UK.

• Lincoln Castle

• Castle Ward, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland

• Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock

• Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, Halifax

Christmas children’s parties

Christmas is by far one of the most magical experiences of childhood. From being too excited to sleep to peeking out of the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa’s sleigh, the memories of the holiday season become some of our most treasured.

In the run up to the big day, throwing a Christmas party for the kids is a great way to make this year even more memorable. Plus, it’s an opportunity for you to get your creative juices flowing and fill the house with festive fun.

Invitations

Snowman Invitations: To make, simply cut out a snowman shape from white card. You can then cut out and stick on a hat made from black card, and stick on a scarf made from felt. Add the face with coloured pens, or use googly eyes for extra impact.

Fancy Dress

When it comes to fancy dress, you’re spoilt for choice. Ask all of the kids to dress as something Christmassy – this can be anything from a penguin to Santa Claus. Provide them with a few ideas on the invitations to get them started.

Decorations

Aside from the essential Christmas tree, you can have lots of fun creating a festive wonderland in your home.

Santa’s Grotto

A great idea is to create a Santa’s grotto – choose a small room, which you don’t need to use and drape the walls and any furnishings with fabric in deep red and purple.

You can then decorate the room with fairy lights, Christmas lights and decorations to make it feel festive. Get one of the adults to dress as Santa Claus and send the children into the ‘grotto’ to collect their party bags and any other treats.

Get Crafty

There are lots of simple Christmas decorations that you can easily make with the kids and the whole family. Try making garlands from pine tree leaves, pine cones, tinsel and baubles. Other ideas include; painting the tips of pine cones white for a snow-effect, cutting snowflakes out of paper to string around the house.

Activities

Every party needs plenty of fun activities to keep everyone entertained. Why not try:

Pass the Parcel

This is a classic game, which can easily be adapted for the festive season. Hide gifts between layers of wrapping paper – the kids pass the parcel round the circle, and if they’re holding it when the music stops, they get to open a layer.

Gift Wrap Relay

Divide the children into two teams and provide each team with a gift-wrapped box – you should also prepare stations with pre-cut wrapping paper and cello tape. Each child has to run to a station, un-wrap and then re-wrap their box, before running back to their team and passing it on to the next person. The first team in which every child unwraps and rewraps the box, wins.

Mystery Stocking

Fill a stocking with a collection of ‘mystery’ party bag fillers, with a distinctive tactile feel. Each child has a chance to feel the fillers inside the stocking – if they can guess what they are without looking, they get to take them home.
